Pieris oleracea occurs in North America east of the Rockies, from northern British Columbia and southern Northwest Territories to Newfoundland, and also in the north-central and northeastern United States. This species is found in moist deciduous and mixed forests and woodlands, and less frequently in prairies, bogs, and fields. One to four broods a year (April-September). The spring form has black-tipped upper forewing, and gray-green edging of veins on the underside; the summer form is all white. The wingspan 23-57 mm. Adults drink nectar from flowers of the Brassicaceae, and the larvae feed on leaves of Cardamine, Boechera, and other mustards. However, the introduced Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is toxic to the caterpillar and lowers its survival probability.
